Agency Adoptions

Typically, in an agency adoption, the biological mother chooses the adoptive parents. However, another option is to proceed with a closed adoption, where the identity of the adoptive parents is not revealed.

I work with prospective adoptive parents throughout the agency adoption process. With significant experience working with adoption agencies, I can help you understand the legal process involved and the strict licensing requirements that agencies are required to meet.

Interstate Adoptions

Interstate adoptions can be more complex than an adoption in which the birth parents and adoptive parents live in the same state. The "Interstate Compact on Placement of Children" (ICPC) regulates interstate adoptions, and both parties must comply with the laws of the "sending" state and those of the "receiving" state. I have experience with interstate adoptions, and understand the complexities that may arise when two states' laws intersect.

Passionate About Adoption

I am truly passionate about helping families grow through adoption, and I stay actively involved in the local and national adoption communities. I am co-founder of the Center for Law and Social Work, a nonprofit agency that develops alternative options for older or ill adoptive parents. I also serve on the Board of Directors of Parents Care and Share, which addresses child abuse prevention. In the past, I was a two-time chair of the Chicago Bar Association Adoption Law Committee, and Director of the Child Custody and Adoption Pro Bono Project of the American Bar Association.
